There are various types of guides, because everybody has different needs. Many now use a travel guide on a Smartphone, tablet, or Kindle or Nook, and these suggestions should help with your selection.

Munich Christkindlmarkt

This year the Munich Christkindlmarkt or Christmas market opens in Marienplatz as always, from November 25th until Christmas Eve, 24th December. The view below was taken on 15th November showing the construction of the stalls. More information is available from the Munich Tourist Office.

If you would like to see a live webcam showing how work progresses, see this Downtown Munich Webcam. This is a great way to see the heart of Munich change during the day and night. Highly recommended.

What is good about the reviews from Munich TripAdvisor is the fact they are made by ordinary people, not professionals. At least if you read the reviews you will get a feel for the market and Munich.

Munich Airport live flight information

It does not make sense to duplicate existing information, I guess this would be call plagiarism. If you are like me, on a sunny day you notice the aircraft flying overhead, and wonder. Where has it come from, where is it going, what type of plane is it, etc etc. There is a Blog that has all this information for just about anywhere on earth, including Munich Airport live flight information. You can load the link and then select the part of the the world you are interest in. Naturally Munich is very interesting, so I would recommend this as a starting point. See flying as you have never seen it before.

Use the + and – signs at the top left hand to view the map at the level of detail you would like. Flying aircraft are normally shown as a yellow symbol. With the mouse you can click on a plane and see the type, the high it is flying at, the speed and much more. Zoom down to the airport level and click on the airport symbol and there is flight arrival and departure times.

Daily Munich News in English

Now there is an excellent source of Munich news in English for the visitor and expat. Many German citizens will also use the information to see how the world reports on Munich. A long step since I first created the first Munich City Guide in 1996, when I did everything alone.

First reported in the menu ” Suggest Ideas for Munich Guide” the information is local, and up to date. There are also versions for France and shortly Spain and Italy. There is a lot of information, more than anybody can keep up with, so a resource like this can be very helpful.

Oktoberfest 2013

The Munich Oktoberfest 2013 construction is well underway, and should be ready for the opening of the 2013 Oktoberfest on 21st September. Construction information here with images and local webcam views.

Every year Munich holds a competition to select the design as the official logo or motive for the Oktoberfest. This is used on many different types of articles and collectables. To see motives from previous years you can visit Munich Oktoberfest Motives which shows the different styles used back to 1980.

Still a month to go, but things are moving fast. The biggest problem for people deciding now to make a visit, are Munich flights and hotel rooms. Many hotels are already full and prices are always higher than normal.

It might be worth considering a hotel outside of Munich and travel in by train. A Bayern ticket will cost €22 for the day, and can be used on all forms of public transport. Add additional people to the ticket for only €4 extra. This is a great way to travel if you are a visitor or plan to travel by car. There will be very few parking places available and can cost a lot of money.

In just over a day the 2013 Munich Oktoberfest opens on the Theresienwiese which is within walking distance from the main railway station. The best method if not arriving by bus or coach is the use the U4 or U5 trains which stop at the festival grounds

Oktoberfest Ochsenbraterei

The Oktoberfest starts to fill up from 07.30am and most tents are full by 9.30- 10.00am. If you don’t have a reservation, it can mean a long wait to be allowed in, as the numbers are strictly controlled for safety reasons. Security is extensive even with a reservation as bags, rucksacks etc. are checked. Good to know.

There are a number of reservation options, including boxes. balcony and even the main floor area. Always check what you are booking. We had no booking, so selected a smaller tent that served chicken and duck and naturally beer, then about 14.00pm it was easier to get inside the Ochsenbraterei, (the name basically means roasted oxen on a rotisserie ).

It was full and difficult to find a table, but we did in the end. The Oktoberfest is international in it’s visitors, so you never know whom you might start up a conversation with. We met Germans, English, Brazilians, Americans, Russians and some we had no idea of their country.

Ready for the hungry guests	If you know how to sing, join in.
Special memory of the Ochsenbraterei It is really amazing how much one can drink when enjoying good company and singing, but it inevitably leads to the need to go to the toilet. For men it is relatively easy to find the “Pissoir”, what was very unusual was the interior decoration on the walls.

Have you ever noticed how the price of petrol varies depending on the time of the day? In Drachselsried we have a Shell station, and over the last few days it has gone from 146.9 to 158.9 cents per litre. This can make quite a difference if you are filling up.

There is now a website that works all over Germany, that shows all the petrol stations within a given Post Code area. The Post Code for Munich starts with 8, so for example 80634 and shows petrol stations withing a given zone, so if you are in the area you can fill up at the best current price. Just input the Post Code and the kilometre range, then you have it. A great App.

2014 Munich City Guide

There is always the need to make changes and improvements to any website. The basic structure of the 2014 Munich City Guide is still the same, once you have entered the site through any number of links. It is not easy as a non web designer to show information in a new way that helps visitors quickly locate what is required. The original Munich City Guide or as it is sometimes called in the press the Munich Travel Guide will continue to bring ideas and information to anybody planning a trip to Munich or living in Munich.
